Norma Gill Thompson is submitted to an ileostomy by Doctor Rupert Turnbull in the Cleveland Clinic Hospital, and nine weeks later she starts volunteering in the rehabilitation process of people with ostomies.

Norma Gill Thompson is invited to work as a technician in rehabilitating people with ostomies in the Cleveland Clinic Hospital.

Foundation of the American Association of Enterostomal Therapists (AAET) by Doctor Rupert Turnbull and Norma Thompson Gill. Currently referred to as Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nursing Society (WOCN®).

1978
On May 18th, Norma Gill Thompson founds the World Council of Enterostomal Therapists (WCET®) during an event in Milan, with representatives of 15 countries, as well as representatives of technology industries. In this event, she was named the first president of the WCET®.

WCET® establishes Enterostomal Therapy as a nurse exclusive specialty.
